Simondon's Concept of Ethological Perception and the Influence of Pre-Platonic "Apeiron"

We trace a concept of “ethological perception” in Gilbert Simondon associated with a “metastable ethology” that could disarticulate the differentiation between the mechanisms of physical and living individuation clearly established by the French philosopher in Individuation in Light of Notions of Form and Information. We are located in the course Man and the object (1974-1975), where an idea of “object-organism” appears that triggers this problem. In a second moment, we inquire about the pre-Platonic foundation of the “pre-individual” in Individuation and the emphasis on the notion of apeiron (the “unlimited”), since this allows Simondon to pose a “charge of nature” that is maintained in the individuated entities as a potential remainder, which we take as a key to interpret the “ethological” dimension mentioned regarding perception. We conclude with some projections that delve into this possibility regarding Protagoras and Quentin Meillassoux’s “speculative materialism”.
