This work makes a general presentation of contemporary debates concerning possible worlds. After explaining how did possible world semantics appear in modal logic, some applications of the notion are roughly discussed: (i) the distinction between proper names and descriptions; (ii) the mind-body problem; and (iii) the existence of God. In the last part, Posibilist and Actualist metaphysics are contrasted, emphasizing the shortcomings of the several proposals.References
