Relativism has risen in the estimation of Postmodern societies, but it is as old as Aristotle, as we can see in his Metaphysics, Bk. IX. Thomas Aquinas' stance concerning Relativism can be found in his commentary on that book. He there makes use of modal concepts (necessity, possibility, contingency, etc.) as the fundamental conceptual tool, valid at all epistemological levels: logical, physical, metaphysical, moral, political, artistic, etc. Aquinas' answer to Relativism, or rather his «alternative», can be called theory ofthe best possible. The present paper outlines that theory, based on another one, the theory of the necessarily possible. Such a theory is widely unattended today and might be regarded with a certain degree of nostalgia, although its importance is easy to see.References
