NATURAL KNOWLEDGE AND DISCURSIVE KNOWLEDGE WITH RESPECT TO THE SENSIBLE GOOD IN AQUINAS

Saint Thomas distinguishes sensitive appetites according to a preceding knowledge which may either be apprehension and immediate judgment of something good delightful to the senses according to the nature of the senses, or an estimate of convenience or usefulness, which implies comparing something good surrounded by circumstances —or accompanied or mediated by sorrow— with some future good that may be delightfull to the senses. This estimate, even in animals, implies a proximity to reason, which in man may be called particular reason. These different ways of knowledge of the sensible good through the senses echo the distinction between ut natura and ut ratio that Aquinas applies to spiritual knowledge and volition, though in this context, natura also means a closer proximity to the physical nature and a further distance from reason.References
