This paper illustrates the historical path of the liturgical and theological discussion on the efficacy of the sacraments in the Middle Ages through three theories: physical causality, pact causality and instrumental causality. The reading of the texts shows that this is a semiotic discussion about the value (vis) of sanctification or signification that signs, whether sacraments or words, have.References
