WHY IS THERE A ‘BEFORE’ AND AN ‘AFTER’? ARISTOTLE’S POSITION IN PHYSICS IV 11, 219a10-19

The reference to an order anterior-posterior is part of Aristotle’s definition of time. One can therefore assume that, in addition to the temporal sense usually attributed to it, the conceptual pair anterior-posterior must also have a distinct sense on which the temporal one depends. This idea seems to be substantiated by Aristotle’s thesis that time follows change and change follows magnitude. According to this thesis the order anterior-posterior of time originates in an order anterior-posterior of the change, which in turn originates in an order anterior-posterior of the magnitude covered by that change. The article analyses this thesis in detail. In doing so it focuses on the difficulties for the understanding of the anterior and posterior of the magnitude, that is the level on which ultimately depends the possibility to explain the existence of a before and an after in time. The interpretation offered here intends to confirm this dependence and to make it comprehensible.
