Parmenide as Aristotle's Opponent: On a Connection Between the Physics and the Metaphysics

Aristotle’s Physics and Metaphysics describe Parmenides’ philosophy in different ways that may be even contradictory between them. I will show that Parmenides is presented, in the Physics, as a champion of immutability, while in the Metaphysics Parmenides is described as a champion of relativism. This difference responds dialectically to the aims of the discussion undertaken in each treatise. I also argue that monism, viz. ‘’all is one’,’ is understood by Aristotle from both an ontological and epistemological point of view. This explains why Aristotle exposes Parmenides’ thesis in different ways.
