HISTORY OF CATHOLIC PHILOSOPHY IN CHILE DURING THE XX CENTURY

Based on some research made by Catholic University of Chile between 1979 and 1984, the greater influence that Catholic philosophy had in the late XIX century and the early XX century could be told; basically, influenced by Aeterni Patris Encyclical written by León XIII promulgated in 1879 and what Catholic University of Chile did for Catholic intellectualism itself. Consequently, outstanding chilean thinkers emerged and went deeply into metaphysic, based on catholic thoughts (Lira Pérez, Finlayson, Gandolfo y Martínez), in charge of spreading Christian's philosophy (Miller, Restat, Escudero, Larson, Silva, Rosales y Jiménez), in philosophy of Law (Peragallo y Lira Ulrquieta), in political philosophy (Frei, Castillo y Bustos) and in philosophy of education (Hurtado); most of these scholars made their analysis and contribution based on Thomism or Neo-Thomism philosophy (Maritain), without neglecting other philosophers and postures.
